TUBIN (Technische Universität Berlin Infrared Nanosatellite) is a university satellite mission with the objective to demonstrate novel Earth remote sensing technologies for nanosatellites. Since power and size limitations prove prohibitive to accommodating cooled HgCdTe infrared detectors on a nanosatellite, TUBIN will carry two uncooled microbolometer imagers. In addition, a third imager with sensitivity in the visible spectrum will complement the infrared payload. The ground resolution of the thermal images will be 180 m. Due to the much smaller pixel size, the images of the visible spectrum camera will have a ground resolution of 50 m.

Following the TechnoSat mission, TUBIN is the second satellite to be based on the TUBiX20 satellite platform of Technische Universität Berlin. Secondary mission objective is the on-orbit verification of the high accuracy configuration of the TUBiX20 attitude determination and control system.

Abstract | Several small satellites in the class of pico- and nano-satellites will be equipped with multiple small corner cubes: OPS-SAT (ESA), S-Net and TechnoSat (8 kg resp. 15 kg; Technical University Berlin). The size of these satellites is in the range of 10x10x30 cm, up to about 40 x 40 x 30 cm; the planned circular orbits are in the 500 - 600 km range. Commercially available 0.5” corner cubes will be used for SLR; a single corner cube of this size will be sufficient for SLR to the planned LEO orbits. Placing several of these corner cubes on each side of the satellites will not only allow for standard SLR and POD, but also for an independent attitude determination with < 1° accuracy, even after the end of the satellites lifetime, or in case of problems or satellite failure. |
