The Mission

The research project SALSAT (Spectrum AnaLysis SATellite) developed, launched, and operates a nanosatellite with a payload for spectrum analysis in orbit. The main payload consists of the spectrum analyzer SALSA, which has been developed and qualified in the project of the same name. The TUBiX10 bus from the Technical University (TU) Berlin was used as the satellite bus. Modifications were be made to the existing flight spare satellite of the S-Net mission for this purpose. The project tasks included designing the necessary hardware and software, as well as operating the satellite in orbit. During the SALSAT mission, scientific data on the global use of the frequency spectrum is beeing collected and analyzed, and algorithms for mission analysis and interference detection will be developed.

The Payload

The SALSAT mission includes the  SALSA spectrum analyzer as its primary payload for investigating frequency usage from orbit. Specifically, only a portion of the spectrum used for satellite communication (e.g., in the amateur radio band) will be considered:

  • VHF: 145.80 – 174.00 MHz
  • UHF: 400.15 – 420.00 MHz
            435.00 – 438.00 MHz
  • S-Band: 2 075.00 – 2 095.00 MHz
                 2 255.00 – 2 275.00 MHz

The goal is to determine and analyze the global utilization of the frequency spectrum within the aforementioned frequency ranges. The resulting outcome will be a global depiction of the utilized frequency spectrums based on position and time.

In addition to the SALSA spectrum analyzer, several secondary payloads are planned for the mission:

  • Laser retroreflectors for highly accurate satellite orbit measurement
  • Optical payload for verifying the attitude control system of SALSAT
  • Novel fluid dynamic actuator (FDA) for satellite attitude control
  • Modified S-Link radio transceiver for full-duplex communication in the S-Band.

Amateurfunk

SALSAT utilizes amateur radio frequencies in the UHF band for satellite operations. The main payload is a spectrum analyzer for capturing spectral data in amateur radio and scientific bands. Scientific payload data is requested and downloaded over the scientific frequencies (S band). SALSAT does not include commercial payloads and does not use amateur radio frequencies for non-amateur radio compliant services. The reason why amateur radio is not used in the S band is that the employed radio transceiver uses a proprietary protocol from the manufacturer (IQWireless). Most of the spectral data is downloaded through this system, partly due to the data rate. The S band system has both uplink and downlink functionalities and should be considered independent of the UHF communication system.

More information about satellite contact (telemetry format, etc.) can be found on the amateur radio website Amateur radio website of the department.

The spectral data recorded from the amateur radio bands during the mission will be made available to the interested public through an internet platform (similar to the MarconISSta database). More information on this will be provided during the operational phase in 2021.

As part of many practically oriented courses and projects, TU Berlin utilizes amateur radio frequencies in the UHF band to teach satellite operations and communication. The following courses are currently offered:

  • Amateur Radio Novice and Advanced Class
  • Spaceflight Planning and Operations
  • Project Satellite Operations
  • Project Amateur Radio
  • Project Satellite Communications

Within these courses, we have trained and assisted approximately 40 amateur radio operators in obtaining their licenses. Nominal TT&C (Telemetry, Tracking, and Command) operations of the satellites and amateur radio payloads are conducted in the amateur radio bands.

- Amateur Radio Novice and Advanced Class
- Spaceflight Planning and Operations
- Project Satellite Operations
- Project Amateur Radio
- Project Satellite Communications

Vorangehende Forschungsarbeiten

As mentioned before, the planned project focuses on spectrum analysis in orbit. At the Chair of Space Technology at TU Berlin, two projects have already been completed (REPIN and SALSA), from which the theoretical research content served as the basis for defining the mission in this current project. The satellite bus used is based on the TUBiX10 platform, which was developed in the S-Net project and utilizes the SLink radio transceiver. The secondary payload for attitude control is being developed as part of the FDA project.
