The Chair of Space Technology is one of the six chairs of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, perfectly equipped with research, testing and operating facilities, required to support practically oriented education of students.
TU Berlin is fully capable of operating its satellites on its own. A complete ground station with several UHF antennas and a large S-Band antenna is located on the rooftop of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Further UHF antennas connected to TU Berlin’s ground station are located in Spitzbergen. The satellites are operated in the multi-mission control centre in the nanosatellite research complex. The large mission control room is suited for operating TU Berlin’s missions concurrently, but is used also to provide unique education on all aspects of mission operations.
Laboratories for satellite integration
The Chair of Space Technology has two laboratories for satellite integration. The nanosatellite integration laboratory houses thermal chambers, a vacuum chamber, an attitude control test bed and desks for satellite integration. With over 120m², it offers space for integrating and testing multiple satellites at the same time. The picosatellite laboratory is mainly used for integrating the popular CubeSat series BEESAT (Berlin Experimental and Educational Satellite). Three BEESATs have been successfully launched up to now and BEESAT-4 is currently under development.
For manufacturing the structural elements of the satellites and the mechanical support equipment, the Department houses a professional workshop with numerous machines.
Electronics laboratories and PC pool
Staff members and students can use the PC pool and one of the many electronics labs for developing hardware.
Further in-house facilities
The Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics inherits six aeronautics chairs. Since the chairs have many interesting in-house facilities, reaching from large wind tunnels and propulsion test stands to flight simulators, students can gain insights in the close-related field of aeronautics.
